Local independent retailers have always been at the very heart of the community and this article about Food for Thought is part of special series called Around Aberdeenshire to showcase the local producers & suppliers livening up our towns and our taste-buds.
Enter Karen Woodhouse and Jane Hodgson the owners of Food for Thought, a deli and green grocery store in New Deer.
Karen and Jane are really good friends and back in 2000 both of them decided they really wanted to do something local, and positive for the community. So they started out in August of 2000 by trialing ‘Veg in a box’ a vegetable box delivery scheme with 6 other friends as their first customers.
Veg in a Box soon became a hit, and so they started doing local farmers markets to drum up more interest and to get the word out.
While at the local markets it was clear to them there was a need for a supplier of good quality food that could not be bought locally so they decided to open a shop deli and grocery in 2004 to cater to more people while still delivering veg boxes every Thursday and Friday.
They are now delivering over 60 boxes every week serving the local Buchan area – from Peterhead to Bridge of Don and most towns and villages in between.
And their shop stocks an extensive range of both local produce from local farms and international artisan products. The Food for Thought deli has over 30 different cheeses, a range of charcuterie, olives and anti-pasti, preserves and confectionery.
They now do Cheese-cakes for weddings and celebrations too!
Both the owners love their business and you can see it clearly from their friendly and endearing nature with their customers and the care and attention they put into preparing and packaging produce for customers.
